Even though Ledbury Town Swifts’ second season in Division Two of the Herefordshire Football League came to an end three weeks ago when a 5-1 defeat to league champions Wellington Colts at The Kensal Ground saw them finish second from bottom in the table although four points clear of newcomers Lickhill Colts FC Saturday, they had a further opportunity to take to the field this week with a friendly against third place finishers Tenbury United Colts, scoring a 4-1 win in the process at a sunny Brimfield and Little Hereford Sports Club.
Organized by joint Swifts manager Nick Blakeway, this end-of-season non-competitive affair saw the Ledbury third string bolstered by first teamers James Kenny and Nathan Ince as well as reserves personnel Jai Smallwood, Brad Potter, Nick Bolton, Kane Bruton, Sam Branch and captain Alistair Holder, opting for a 3-4-3 formation but going a goal down after twenty minutes through a 20-yard strike from a Tenbury forward hitting the post before being tapped in by another United attacker on the rebound.
The Swifts replied quickly however as a clever reverse pass from Bolton allowed Branch to perform a great finish in a one-on-one situation with the home goalkeeper, before a corner ball was hooked in by Bolton to be met with a half-clearance as Ince fired home through a crowd of bodies in the box from fifteen yards out.
Liam Waters and Jamie Roberts were introduced for Ince and Branch over the interval, with the visitors remaining dominant throughout much of the second period having switched things up to 3-5-2 formation as Bolton, man of the match Jasper Wilce and Harry Millis continued to excel.
Ledbury’s third goal came via a long goal kick from new goaltender this season Leo Kelly which was allowed to bounce, not being properly dealt with by the opposition’s central players as Branch muscled in to allow Wilce to tap the ball into an empty net.
The icing on the cake was provided via a superb thirty-yard strike from Holder which sailed into the top corner of the net, as Blakeway was thrilled with an excellent performance from his players to conclude another promising season.
